Can't view a PDF on the Web?

Issue

Adobe Reader or Acrobat can't display a PDF file inside a compatible web browser.

Symptoms

We experienced a problem where the Adobe PDF Browser plug-in is broken in Internet Explorer and Firefox, although it may not be limited to those browsers. The problem can appear in several ways, the issue we have noted is the following behaviors:
  • Firefox - A blank page is displayed in the web browser instead of the PDF
  • Explorer - When the PDF link is clicked, a dialog box opens asking to Find a program to open the file with, or to Save the file
If you are experiencing another type of issue, please see the troubleshooting solutions at the Adobe knowledgebase

Note that the Chrome browser default for viewing PDF's is it's own viewer therefore it is not subject to issues with Adobe Acrobat or Reader plug-in options. Might be time for you to try the better faster browser!

Try this Possible Resolution
These steps describe what we did to resolve a plug-in problem on one of our local PC's. The steps were performed in Adobe Acrobat and resolved the plug-in issue with both Firefox and Internet Explorer.
Adobe Acrobat or Reader - Disable and then enable the Adobe Browser preferences

  2. Click File -> Edit -> Preferences
  3. From the list at left, select Internet.
  4. Deselect the web browser options, and then click OK.
  5. Click File -> Edit -> Preferences, select Display PDF in Browser, and then click OK.
